I’ve always loved her passion for the creative arts and creative writing. “Ruth Ann Schmitt is an amazing teacher who is very passionate about what she does. Throughout my internship, she was contacting me regularly to see if I was on the right path. “She helped me get my internship last year. “Susan McGraw goes above and beyond to help her students,” Gardner said. Gardner’s mentors are Susan McGraw, HFC’s Department of Communication and Media chairwoman, and HFC English instructor Ruth Ann Schmitt. “I know he would be proud of me.” Mentors at HFC “I wish my dad could have been here to see this,” she said. She spoke about her late father, who died in late 2021 and was her rock. “Because I won the scholarship, they chose me to be a leader for their Summer of Connection program, where they gather all the winners and host workshops,” Gardner said. Because the cost of tuition was high, even though she was attending both universities on partial scholarships, Gardner transferred to HFC. She completed some coursework at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Detroit Mercy. The third of four children, Gardner is a graduate of Romulus High School. ![]() When I saw how much I won, I burst into tears. “I opened my laptop, and I was shaking when I got the email. ![]() This year, she will get $10,000 from the program. Last year, the lifelong Inkster resident was awarded $5,000 from Taco Bell. ![]() I’m excited that I won, and I’m extremely grateful. “I was crying tears of joy when I found out about the Live Más Scholarship,” she said. Also for the second time, she was awarded the local Barrett Creative Writing Award. From her successes so far while still in college, she is well on her way.įor the second straight time, Gardner won the national Taco Bell Live Más Scholarship.
